Newsletter 1, May 2023
Dear Bannockburn Swim Club Members,
Pool season is almost here now! Opening day for Bannockburn Pool is Saturday, May 20 at 10:30 am.
We would like to extend a very warm welcome to all our members. We hope that the information below is helpful in getting this upcoming pool season off to a great start!
While MPCS schools are still open, our pool is open weekdays and holidays for Early Bird Adult Swim from 6:30 – 8:30 am, weekends from 10:30 am to 8:00 pm and weekdays 3:00 – 8:00 pm. (Please note our swim team will begin practices on May 22 and take up most of the swim lanes on May 22 until mid/late-July from 3:30 – 6:30 pm weekdays).
Closing times over the summer will shift to account for the changing sunset time. On June 17, we will start to close at 8:30 pm. On July 17, we will start to close at 8pm and on August 1, we will start closing at 7:30 pm, but we will send out updates and reminders for that in due course.

Also, please add email@example.com to your email safe list. We communicate regularly with our members from this address throughout the summer.
Swim & Dive Team Registration Open
For families new to the pool, joining the swim or dive team or both is a great way for kids 5-18 to make new friends, have fun, get some exercise while getting immersed in the true pool culture. Swim Team information and registration can be found here and Dive Team here. Dive team practices are weekly in the evenings 630-730 or 730-815

REGISTRATION IS OPEN now to all adults (18+). This program is led by our Bannockburn Swim Team Coach Lucca Scott and is open to all skill levels. Sundays 9:30-10:30am – Fee- $100. Your membership allows you to bring guests into the pool. You can purchase the guest passes ahead of time by accessing your account. Guest passes never expire and can be kept in your account for future seasons, or you can ask for a refund at the end of the season. Guest fees are $5 for all ages Monday – Friday and $10 on weekends and holidays. Even if guests are not swimming they must still use a guest pass to come inside. Guests must be accompanied by a member at all times during the duration of their stay at the pool. For members bringing in 10 or more guests, please complete a party reservation request (see next item below).
Please note that members are requested to make sure they have enough guest passes before bringing any guests to the pool, not just when it’s a party, and that a member MUST be present for a guest to have access to the pool.
For groups of 10 or more people, we ask that you fill out a party reservation request on our website here ideally 1-2 weeks prior to your event. Members are asked to purchase ample guest passes before hosting a party.
Whether your children are just learning how to swim, your teenagers interested in improving their techniques, or you in “remembering” how to backstroke, lessons are available for you! For more information and to sign up, go here. Fees range from $25-45 for 30 minutes paid directly to the instructor depending on experience and skill level. (Minimum age of child for lessons is 3).
Adult Water Aerobics
Marianne Ross is back and will be offering her free adult water aerobics twice a week, Mondays and Thursday, to all members. The class will start on Monday, May 22 and be held in the first 45 minutes after the pool is open: 3-3:45 pm May 22 to June 16; and 10:30-11:15 am June 19 to September 1.
We have a strict NO GLASS policy. Please bring food and drinks in non-glass containers. Wine and beer is allowed as long as it is brought in non-glass.
Unfortunately we were getting fined constantly since many of our members were comingling trash with recyclables. If recycling is important to you please bring your recycles home with you.
We have a small parking lot. If you park on the nearby residential streets please do not block neighbors’ driveways or park on their grass.
Events, Food Trucks, Restaurant Deliveries
Mark your calendar as we are looking to honor our “celebrity” neighbors on June 10th at the pool! They are:
- Makoto Suwa was selected by Japan as an astronaut
- Sarah Wolek was voted to serve us as a state delegate for D16 by the MCDCC
Come and congratulate Makoto and Sarah while having some wonderful food from El Cumpa Chilean and entertainment from General MacArthur & The Boulevards at the Bannockburn pool on Saturday June 10th!
El Cumpa Chilean Street Food Truck 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm (6/10)
Meet the newest food truck in town! El Cumpa is the only Chilean Food Truck in the DMV area serving authentic and fresh Chilean cuisine. They will be offering their homemade empanadas and sandwiches and look forward to introducing Chilean culture to our neighborhood. Menu can be seen here.
Tomás Gutierrez moved here 4 years ago with his wife Jessica, aspiring to own his own food truck, after working for one of the best food truck businesses in Washington DC. After missing his food from back home in Chile, he and his wife decided to open the very first Chilean food truck in the DMV area. Tomás and his wife are very excited to share their unique and delicious cuisine from Chile to the community. One of his most popular items is Pino (beef) Empanadas but everything is delicious!
General MacArthur & The Boulevards 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm (6/10)
General MacArthur & The Boulevards, a beloved and local Bannockburn Rock n Blues Band will be playing for the community to celebrate summer music in the ‘hood! Richard Aitken, Mark Dubester, Don Fitzgerald, Andy Garrett, Amr Khani, Pam Toole & Aaron Zitner are looking forward to celebrating with the community! We will be closing half of the pool parking lot so people can bring lawn chairs and kids can run around and play so please park your car on the nearby residential streets, or better yet walk or bike!
Our pool is famous for great gourmet, ethnic food offerings brought in by trucks and restaurants. Please check our calendar often to see the weekly line up. These small, mostly immigrant, family-owned companies are still struggling due to the impact of Covid so would really appreciate your business. Please consider ordering from them on days they’re on site rather than bringing your own food to make it worth their while.
Please write firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions or feedback. We hope to meet many of our newcomers in the upcoming days and happy swimming to all!
